During a massive combined overnight Wednesday-Thursday air strike on Ukraine, Russia struck the Flex Ltd plant in Mukachevo, a subsidiary of a US-based electronics manufacturing services company listed on Nasdaq.

The news was first reported by Ukraine’s foreign minister Andriy Sybiha and later confirmed by local officials:

“Hundreds of drones, as well as hypersonic, ballistic, and cruise missiles, targeted civilian and energy infrastructure. One of the missiles hit a major American electronics plant in our westernmost region, causing severe damage and casualties. This is a completely civilian facility with no connection to defense or the military,” Sybiha wrote in a post on X

Rescue services were at the scene Thursday afternoon, Aug. 21, and residents were urged to keep windows closed due to air pollution from the strike.

Myroslav Biletskiy, the head of the Zakarpatia region administration, confirmed that cruise missiles targeted the enterprise. Vitaliy Hlahola, a member of the Uzhhorod City Council of the Native Transcarpathia (“Рідне Закарпаття”) party and former journalist, posted on Telegram: “This time, the enemy launched cruise missiles at an industrial facility in the Mukachevo district. The strike destroyed warehouse premises and caused a fire,” he wrote.

The company on Thursday said the incident led to some malfunctions but provided little details.

The Mukachevo plant, which has operated for over 13 years, spans 55,000 square meters and employs more than 2,600 people. It specializes in plastic molding and manufactures components for electrical equipment, coffee machines, printer cartridges, electronic price tags, and other products, dev.ua reported.

According to reports, the plant was struck by two Russian Kalibr cruise missiles at around 4:30 a.m., setting the facility ablaze. Night-shift employees were on-site during the attack, but operations were halted once the air-raid alarm sounded, and workers were moved to designated covered assembly areas.

Ukrainian response

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the attack:

“It was a regular civilian business, supported by American investment, producing everyday items like coffee machines. And yet, it was also a target for the Russians. This is very telling,” he wrote on X

Foreign Minister Sybiha wrote:

“This is not the first Russian attack on American businesses in Ukraine. Earlier this year, the Boeing office in Kyiv was hit. There is no military logic here – only terror against civilians, businesses, and normal life in our country.”

This incident marks the second time an American enterprise has been targeted by Russian missiles in Ukraine this year, signaling an ongoing threat to foreign businesses operating in the country. In June, the Boeing office in Kyiv was hit, FT reported.
