Georgia has been struck by a nationwide blackout that started around midnight on Friday.
The Georgia branch of Radio Liberty said the outage took place across the entire country, including all the major cities. Local outlet Georgia Today said the blackout also affected water supplies as pumping stations stopped working.

The blackout also extends to the occupied Abkhazia annexed by pro-Russian forces in 2008, according to Georgia Today.
Georgia’s State Electrosystem said it was caused by an emergency shutdown, though the exact cause remains unknown.
“The exact causes of the failure are being determined, and we will provide additional information to the public,” the agency was quoted as saying.
The agency warned that some claims circulating about the outage were disinformation and called on media outlets to rely only on official information.
Georgia Today said restoration work is ongoing, with power partially restored in the Mtskheta-Mtianeti region and much of the capital of Tbilisi as of early Friday morning. Parts of Kutaisi, Chiatura, Sachkhere, Oni, and Ambrolauri were also later restored.
The outlet said a similar incident took place in April 2025, when a 500 kilovolt (kV) Kavkasioni power transmission line failed and took out power for 90 percent of the country.
