The Canadian government has permitted Airbus to utilize Russian titanium in its Canadian manufacturing, despite Ottawa’s sanctions against the Russian titanium manufacturer VSMPO-Avisma, Reuters reported.

“Airbus is aware of the Canadian government imposing sanctions on VSMPO and has obtained the necessary authorization to secure Airbus operations in compliance with the applicable sanctions,” Airbus Canada said in response to a Reuters query.

Airbus did not specify the nature or duration of these permits. Canadian authorities have not commented on the situation.

In December 2022, Airbus Corporation announced plans to phase out titanium supplies from Russia within a few months. Reuters sources indicated that the company has increased purchases of titanium from the United States and Japan.

However, they also noted that the certification process for new suppliers could take years due to aerospace standards.

In February 2024, Canada imposed sanctions on VSMPO-Avisma Corporation.

In the summer of 2022, European Union authorities had planned to introduce similar restrictions, but European companies, including Airbus, opposed them.

The development adds to concerns that Western sanctions against Russia are proving ineffective.

In another example of sanctions impotence, a French company based in Chateauroux is continuing to supply avionics and other on-board electronics for Russian aircraft used by senior military and political figures.

The world in focus, as seen by a Canadian leading global affairs analyst, writer and speaker, in his review of international media.

According to an investigation by the French newspaper Le Parisien, PGA, a subsidiary of the American group Astronics, is providing advanced systems that control various aspects of flight, from cabin lighting to communication and data transmission systems, for aircraft used by top Russian officials.

The equipment supplied by PGA allows for secure and reliable communication for mobile phones used by Russian officials, including President Vladimir Putin, the head of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Dmitry Medvedev, Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu, presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov, and other high-ranking officials.

Business with Russian customers not only persisted despite sanctions but also expanded, with the company reportedly earning between €4 and €5 million ($4.3 and $5.3 million) – which corresponds to equipping seven aircraft.

Both Boeing and Airbus bought large amount of Titanium in Russia. There are not many supplier for such quantities. Chinas Airplane Industrie is waiting for the Volume. Titanium is used at the Engines. As example the french Company Safran. 2023 Titanium from Russia was worth 345 Mio. Airbus is behind with 5000 Airplanes in their Order Book.

@Canada sucks balls,

Oh my....sensing a lot of negative emotions from the MRGA troll base today. Is this precipitated by $110 Billion in lethal weapon Karma coming russia's way in the next 6 months?

It just makes me smile to say that. $110 BILLION IN LETHAL WEAPONS KARMA. What's russia's annual military budget again.... $60 billion.... for the crappy stuff that falls apart so easily.

Finally russia gets to experience the sorrow it has inflicted on its once peaceful neighbour Ukraine. I am so happy Ukraine will be able to solidly thump the orc infestation this year.

I heard a long range USA Himars / ATACMS speaks the only language putin can understand. "KABOOM!".

@Russia SUCKS BALLS,

Firstly I commend your concern for the Ukrainians. I assume this means russia will stop coming and murdering them shortly in their own country? That your concern now extends to how Ukrainians are treated in foreign countries is admirable.

To be honest I do not know the reasons for the Visa scheme for new arrivals ending on March 31st 2024. The two countries have great relations so I doubt this was done in isolation. Perhaps it ties to Ukraine's current population decline and its need to stem the tide of the russian inflicted refugee crisis?

FYI: for those with relatives here (~5% of Canadian population including our Minister of Finance is of Ukrainian heritage), there are exemptions until March, 2025. Its best Ukrainians check out their options at https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/immigrate-canada/ukraine-measures.html

Was there something else we both can help Ukraine with?

@John, I should add that the longstanding visa scheme remains in place for all foreign persecuted refugees including Ukrainians. The programs discussed above are the temporary Ukrainian preferential ones started at the commencement of russia's bombing of Ukraine to handle the huge exodus of war refugees. Also a lot of fast track visa programs now exist of skilled labour....as with most western nations where populations were declining. Like the USA, Canada is a melting pot of ethnicities and thats a good thing for global harmony & trade (and foreign food lovers like myself). For those of racist idealology don't bother applying....we don't want you.

@Depau, No worries MRGA troll. I am on it. Already reminded my Canadian leadership to work with its allies to remove any dependency on putin's regime.

Interesting factoid is that Airbus Canada is owned by its EU parent in whose nation russian titanium has been sanctioned. It used to be owned by Canadian company Bombardier, but after making significant investment to sell 75 commuter jets to Delta, putinrump then levied an outrageous 300% tariff which cost it that sale. In subsequent financial duress, they sold out to this EU based company.

putinrump pretty much ticked off every American ally in his disastrous term, but overall USA trade deficit with others rose to its highest level. According to Politico: "$679 billion in 2020, compared to $481 billion in 2016, the year before Trump took office." The largest benefactor of course being China with its $419 billion excess USA sales in 2018. Trade deficit with russian also rose. I guess being trade savvy was too much to expect from a man that bankrupted his companies 6 times at great creditor cost. Its almost as if he was trying to ruin both the USA and its allies.

I agreed with David below that all allies need to help each other in weaning off all russian products.

@John, oops...big typo. Should say " EU parent in whose nation russian titanium has NOT been sanctioned."

@John, 'Already reminded my Canadian leadership to work with its allies to remove any dependency on putin's regime.' - out of curiosity - how does it look like in Canada - you send a letter or write an email?

@depau, Well with postage fee for a letter costing $1.07 I use email. I start all my emails with "Dear Canadian Leadership" and send them to all party leads or Corporate / NGO heads) , thanking them for what they have done in unity so far to help Ukraine, and then build the case for further support. including all party leads, gives the opposition something to think about if the ruling party is not doing enough. In general though it's very popular in Canada to support Ukraine. Canada hosts the 3rd largest Ukrainian heritage diaspora in the world.

Sometimes I hear back. Mostly not though as these are very busy people. Thats okay. I always try to build unity & express gratitude as it works better than the troll technique of being rude and pitting supporters against each other. Folks like to feel they are contributing to a good cause. Supporting Ukraine is a great cause!

I realize for troll's a lot of the above are difficult concepts to understand given their malfeasant leaderships brainwashing. Did you need further education...we are here to help with your mental rehabilitation so you can fit back into civilization again some day.

It is time that a specialized factory for air frame grade Titanium metal is set up at some Western country. It will cost, as the expertise and know-how is learnt, but the west cannot be beholden to Russia for it.
