Russia’s Foreign Ministry said it strongly condemns Israel’s military operation against Iran and expressed deep concern over the growing escalation in the Middle East. The statement described the strikes on Iran as “unprovoked” and “categorically unacceptable,” targeting a sovereign UN member state, its citizens, peaceful cities, and nuclear infrastructure.

Following Russia’s sharp criticism of Israel, Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry responded with irony.

“This awkward moment when Russia’s Foreign Ministry made a statement about the Middle East but forgot to look at the mirror,” wrote Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Georgiy Tykhyi on the social media platform X.

The Russian Foreign Ministry accused Israel of deliberately escalating the conflict in the region, saying that the strikes were carried out during a session of the IAEA Board of Governors and just ahead of a new round of indirect talks between Iran and the United States.

“What adds particular cynicism to the situation is the fact that the Israeli attacks were launched during the IAEA Board of Governors’ session and on the eve of renewed indirect contacts between Iranian and US representatives,” the ministry said.

Moscow described Israel’s actions as a “deliberate choice to raise the stakes” and warned that responsibility for the consequences would lie with the Israeli leadership. The statement concluded with a call for restraint from both Israel and Iran to prevent the region from sliding into full-scale war.

Iran Warns Israel: Any Attack on Beirut Will Trigger Resumption of War

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi warned that if Israel attacks Beirut, it will trigger a “return to war” and insisted that any ceasefire must apply to both Iran and Lebanon. He said Iran’s return to negotiations would be conditional on securing the rights of the Iranian people and ending what he called the war against Iran, Lebanon and the entire region.

Israel launched a major airstrike campaign on Iran early Friday, June 13, hitting nuclear and military sites across the country in what Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called a “very successful” opening phase of a broader operation.

The attacks killed high-ranking Iranian military leaders and nuclear scientists, damaged key facilities, and escalated fears of a wider war in the region. Iran responded by launching about 100 drones toward Israel, which the Israeli military said it was working to intercept.
