The US has warned of a heightened threat of attacks both at home and abroad following its military strikes on Iran’s nuclear sites.

The US State Department has advised Americans worldwide to be extra cautious due to rising tensions in the Middle East. In a travel alert published June 22, the agency cited the risk of protests and potential violence targeting US citizens.

“The conflict between Israel and Iran has resulted in disruptions to travel and periodic closure of airspace across the Middle East.  There is the potential for demonstrations against US citizens and interests abroad.  The Department of State advises US citizens worldwide to exercise increased caution,” the warning said.

The statement does not directly mention the US airstrikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities, but security officials have linked those events to the increased threat of risks.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) separately warned that the crisis with Iran is fueling a “heightened threat environment” within the United States itself.

According to DHS, there is concern that militant extremists inside the country could “mobilize to violence” – especially if Iran’s leadership issues a “fatwah” religious decree calling for revenge against the US.

“The likelihood of violent extremists in the Homeland independently mobilizing to violence in response to the conflict would likely increase if Iranian leadership issued a religious ruling calling for retaliatory violence against targets in the Homeland,” the DHS has warned.

US Officials Reappear at Russia’s Top Economic Forum After Nearly a Decade

Putin aide Ushakov confirmed that a US delegation, led by Head of the US Federal Commission of Fine Arts Rodney Mims Cook, is visiting the SPIEF 2026 to talk about cultural ties amid a wider push from the West to separate culture from politics despite Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine.

Officials also raised alarms about possible Iranian cyberattacks on US networks and threats to officials tied to the 2020 killing of Iranian General Qassem Soleimani.

The DHS bulletin, issued hours after the US strikes, will remain in effect until September 22.

On June 22, US forces targeted three key Iranian nuclear facilities in Fordo, Natanz, and Isfahan. President Donald Trump declared that all three sites had been “completely destroyed,” though the extent of the damage has yet to be confirmed – the Pentagon said its assessments were ongoing.

According to NBC News, the Trump administration is bracing for potential Iranian retaliation. The network also reported that, days before the strikes, Iran sent a private warning to Trump threatening to activate sleeper cells within the US if Washington attacked Iranian territory.

That message was reportedly delivered through an intermediary at the G7 summit held in Canada, June 15–17. Trump abruptly left the meeting early, with sources saying he returned to Washington to weigh military options.

The latest US warnings come as fears grow that the conflict between Israel and Iran could spiral into broader violence affecting American citizens and its interests worldwide.
