WASHINGTON, DC – Italy’s top diplomat on Tuesday reaffirmed his country’s unwavering commitment to supporting Ukraine against Russian aggression. This includes continued backing for NATO’s military aid initiatives, such as providing air defense systems, while also actively pursuing efforts to achieve a just and lasting peace.

Antonio Tajani, Italy’s foreign minister, met with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio at the State Department Tuesday morning. Their discussions focused on the Russia-Ukraine war, the Middle East, and shared priorities regarding China and Latin America, according to State Department Spokesperson Tammy Buce.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Tajani emphasized Italy’s alignment with NATO’s approach to Russia’s war in Ukraine. He indicated that Rubio provided insights into the US stance following recent discussions with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.

When asked about US plans to send weapons to Kyiv through NATO, Tajani responded: “The decision lies with NATO. We are in favor of supporting Ukraine. Secretary General Mark Rutte will discuss it with the leaders, and we’ll see what course of action to take.”

He then added: “For now, it’s important that there has been a strong decision from the American side in support of Ukraine, following the major event in Rome, which was not only an economic event but also an important political signal of support for Kyiv.”

The US reportedly plans to reduce fighter jets, surveillance aircraft, tankers and naval assets assigned to NATO operations in Europe, raising pressure on allies to fill key defense gaps.

Tajani also lauded the success of the recent Ukraine Conference in Rome, endorsing the vision presented by the US administration to its allies.

He reiterated Italy’s unwavering support for defending the Ukrainian population, including through the provision of air defense, recognizing the critical need to shield the population from ongoing attacks.

He went on to echo Trump’s recent message to Putin: “President Trump’s message to Putin was a good one – he must stop this attack, especially against the civilian population. An agreement must be reached as soon as possible,” he said.

Italy’s dedication extends beyond military assistance to robust diplomatic engagement. Tajani highlighted shared perspectives on major international issues, including support for US efforts to achieve peace in Ukraine.

He further articulated Italy’s stance on sanctions, stating: “We are in favor of a course of action that includes sanctions. We will act together with the European Union, but we will observe what the United States does, as they have given Putin 50 days to respond to their proposal.”

Italy continues to position itself as a key player in fostering both the defense and recovery of Ukraine, advocating for strong transatlantic unity and a comprehensive approach to securing peace in the region, while also engaging on critical global security issues.
