Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski said on Monday that China is the only country that can force Russia to end its war in Ukraine.

Sikorski commented on China’s potential role as a peacemaker at the Warsaw Security Forum on Sept. 29, as per Ukrinform.

“I personally believe that China is the only country that can actually force a ceasefire in this war,” the minister said – adding that his Chinese counterpart has assured him that Beijing strongly supports a ceasefire.

“But, of course, just saying this is not enough. We need to see pressure on Russia for a ceasefire to happen.”

Sikorski cited then withdrawal of Russian troops from Kazakhstan in early 2022 as a case in which he believes China exerted its influence on the Kremlin.

Russian troops entered the country after mass protests broke out over a sudden hike in energy prices. Russian President Vladimir Putin accused the protesters of using “Maidan technologies” and being in thrall to unnamed foreign powers, as per the Financial Times.

More than 200 protesters were killed, and Russian forces left less than a week after they had arrived.

Sikorski also appealed to Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi to convince Belarus to halt its destabilization attempts near the Polish-Belarusian border – which he said would be in China’s interest, as Belarus–Poland is an important trade route into Europe for Beijing.

Polish Far-Right Calls for Block of Ukraine’s EU Bid Over ‘Heroes of the UPA’ Unit

Polish far-right leader Krzysztof Bosak said Poland should block Ukraine’s EU membership bid in response to Kyiv’s decision to grant an elite military unit the honorary title “Heroes of the UPA.” The comments mark the latest escalation in a growing dispute over the legacy of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army, which – eight decades later – remains one of the most sensitive issues in Polish-Ukrainian relations.

On Sept. 10, Warsaw closed that border and ceased all bilateral trade with Belarus in response to what Foreign Ministry spokesperson Paweł Wroński described as “repeated provocations” from Poland’s neighbour.

The border re-opened on Thursday, according to Ukrinform.
