Ukraine launched a large-scale overnight drone and missile attack targeting Russian-occupied Crimea and several regions across Russia, striking energy infrastructure and military sites, according to local reports and officials.

Explosions reported across Crimea

The pro-Ukrainian Telegram channel Crimean Wind reported that the first explosions occurred at the Saky airfield in Novofedorivka around 12:23 a.m., followed by air defense activity.

Within an hour, additional explosions were reported in Feodosia, Yevpatoria, and the Simferopol district, including near the village of Andriivka, where the Kacha airfield is located.

Crimean Wind later reported that an oil depot in Feodosia had been hit, with videos and photos of the strike circulating online.

The photo below reportedly shows the state of the oil depot as of 8 a.m. Monday, Oct. 6.

Explosions were also reported near a military unit between Yevpatoria and Zatyshne. There have been no official comments yet on the extent of the damage or casualties.

General Staff confirms strike on Feodosia oil terminal

The General Staff confirmed in its Telegram report at 13:21 that facilities of the JSC “Marine Oil Terminal” in Feodosia in Crimea were struck.

“This is a multifunctional technological complex for transshipment of oil and oil products from railway tank cars to sea vessels and back, as well as road transport. It is involved in supplying the occupation army of the Russian aggressor,” the report states.

Black Sea Blow: Ukraine Damages Sanctioned Russian Tanker in Major Strike

Ukraine’s military struck the sanctioned Russian tanker FINA A in the Black Sea, targeting a vessel used to transport oil in circumvention of Western sanctions. The operation also damaged two road bridges and multiple Russian command and drone-control points across occupied territories and inside Russia.

The strike caused a large-scale fire at the facility.

In addition, another hit in Crimea was confirmed: an ammunition depot of a separate material support battalion of Russia’s 18th Combined Arms Army was targeted, with the results still being assessed.

“The defense forces continue to take all measures to undermine the military-economic potential of the Russian occupiers and force the Russian Federation to stop its armed aggression against Ukraine,” the report added.

Power blackout in Belgorod after strikes on energy sites

Meanwhile, in Russia’s Belgorod Oblast, tens of thousands of residents were left without electricity after a strike on a thermal power plant, Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said.

According to him, about 40,000 people across seven municipalities lost power following overnight shelling. Emergency crews are working to restore supply.

Russian Telegram channels reported on Sunday evening, Oct. 5, that a “missile strike” hit the Luch substation in Belgorod, setting it on fire and causing widespread power outages across the city.

Social media users posted photos and videos showing the moment the substation exploded and the lights went out.

According to some reports, the blast also disrupted water supply and internet access in several areas.

Belgorod and parts of the region had already experienced a total blackout on Sept. 28, when both the Belgorod thermal power plant and the same substation were attacked. Power was only restored to the city on Sept. 30.

Explosions and fire reported in Bryansk region

In the town of Klintsy in Russia’s Bryansk Oblast, a large fire broke out at a local thermal power plant, which was likely hit by a missile strike, according to Russian media.

Eyewitnesses reported hearing a powerful explosion near the facility before the blaze erupted, and local residents said parts of the city were left without power.

Drones hit Russia’s largest explosives plant

During the overnight attack drones also struck the Sverdlov Plant in Dzerzhinsk, Nizhny Novgorod region - one of Russia’s largest explosives manufacturers - sparking a fire.

The facility, located about 900 kilometers from the Ukrainian border, is a key enterprise in Russia’s military-industrial complex.

According to the ASTRA Telegram channel, explosions began around 2:30 a.m. local time, with residents reporting between 25 and 30 blasts within an hour. Bright flashes lit up the sky, and the shockwaves triggered car alarms across the town.

Regional Governor Gleb Nikitin said air defenses intercepted about 20 drones near the Dzerzhinsk industrial zone. Several buildings were damaged - including shattered windows and a gas station roof - though officials claimed that industrial facilities were not affected.

The facility has been targeted multiple times during the war. In April 2025, three drones hit the plant, damaging two workshops and a pipeline. A previous large-scale strike in October 2024 - confirmed by Kyiv Post’s sources in Ukraine’s Special Services - involved a massive wave of Ukrainian drones.

The General Staff confirmed in its Telegram report at 13:21 that units of Ukraine’s Defense Forces struck the infrastructure of the Sverdlov Plant early on the morning of Oct. 6.

The Sverdlov Plant is one of Russia’s largest producers of explosives, capable of equipping nearly all types of munitions - including aerial and artillery shells, guided aerial bombs, warheads for anti-tank guided missiles, engineering ammunition, and warheads for air defense missile systems.

As part of inter-service cooperation, the plant also equips the warheads of unified glide munitions.

“Numerous explosions and a fire were recorded in the area of the target,” the General Staff reported.

The Russian Defense Ministry claimed that its air defenses destroyed 251 Ukrainian drones overnight, including:

  • 40 over occupied Crimea,
  • 34 over Kursk Oblast,
  • 30 over Belgorod Oblast,
  • 20 over Nizhny Novgorod Oblast,
  • 17 over Voronezh Oblast,
  • 11 over Krasnodar Krai

Additionally, eight UAVs were reportedly shot down over the Bryansk and Tula Oblasts, while two more were intercepted over the Vladimir, Ivanovo, Kaluga, Tambov, and Oryol Oblasts.

One drone was destroyed over each of the Lipetsk and Moscow Oblasts.

The ministry also claimed that 62 drones were downed over the Black Sea and another five over the Sea of Azov.

Moscow has recently intensified missile and drone strikes on Ukraine’s energy grid, while President Volodymyr Zelensky has vowed “retaliatory” strikes on Russia’s own energy infrastructure.
