Ukraine’s military intelligence (HUR) has revealed full technical details of Russia’s newest attack drone, the Geran-5, describing it as a faster, longer-range, jet-powered weapon that still relies heavily on foreign technology.

HUR published the findings on its War & Sanctions website, releasing a 3D model of the drone along with a breakdown of its systems and components.

The findings say the Geran-5 is a clear step up from earlier versions used in mass attacks on Ukrainian cities and energy infrastructure.

Faster, heavier, deadlier

Russian forces used the Geran-5 against Ukraine for the first time in early 2026, during combined aerial attacks, intelligence officials said. The strikes marked the first recorded combat deployment of the new drone.

According to the report, the Geran-5 weighs about 850 kilograms and can fly at speeds of up to 600 kilometers (373 miles) per hour – far faster than previous Geran drones. It can stay in the air for around two hours and strike targets nearly 1,000 kilometers (620 miles) away.

The drone flies at altitudes of up to 6 kilometers (19,700 feet), though combat use has so far been recorded much lower.

The Geran-5 is powered by a Chinese-made turbojet engine, the TELEFLY TF-TJ2000A, giving it jet-like speed rather than the slow buzz of earlier models.

Iranian roots, Russian assembly

Intelligence officials say the drone’s design closely mirrors Iran’s Karrar, and that many of its systems match those used in other Geran drones produced at Russia’s Alabuga plant.

Russian-Held Sevastopol Suspends Fuel Distribution as Ukraine Strikes Supply Routes

Sevastopol authorities in Russian-occupied Crimea temporarily suspended petrol rationing coupon use after supply trucks were unable to deliver fuel, following reported Ukrainian strikes on logistics routes. Officials said priority refuelling would go to emergency and public services, while new coupons would be issued. The disruption comes amid broader fuel shortages across Crimea and intensified Ukrainian drone attacks on Russian energy and transport infrastructure.

Russia is also exploring whether the drone could be launched from a Su-25 jet, potentially expanding how it is used in combat.

Built with Western and Chinese tech

Despite sanctions, Ukraine’s intelligence says the Geran-5 uses electronics sourced from China, the United States, and Germany.

Its systems include satellite navigation, inertial guidance, and a telemetry unit built around a Raspberry Pi microcomputer, along with cellular and mesh communications equipment.

The airframe is made of carbon fiber, with an internal structure of aluminum and steel. The drone carries experimental “E-series” markings, previously seen on modified Geran-2 drones.

Sanctions under strain

The intelligence agency also revealed 105 additional foreign-made electronic components found in other Russian weapons, including Geran-2 drones, the Zala T-20 UAV, and the Kh-32 cruise missile.

Ukrainian officials say the findings show that Russia continues to bypass sanctions and expand its strike capabilities using foreign technology and Iranian-based designs.
