Ukraine has formed new combat units within the National Guard, including drone, assault and air-defense regiments, Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko said Tuesday, March 10.
Klymenko said the decision was based on battlefield experience and the growing role of modern technologies in combat operations.

According to the minister, the newly established units include regiments of unmanned systems, assault regiments and a separate regiment tasked with protecting airspace.
“The main goal is to strengthen units’ capabilities on the battlefield, scale the use of modern technologies and improve the effectiveness of countering aerial threats,” Klymenko wrote on social media.
He noted that a significant number of Interior Ministry units are currently carrying out combat missions on the front line, making it necessary to constantly analyze changes in the nature of warfare and adapt the structure of forces accordingly.
Klymenko added that the reform of the corps structure within Ukraine’s Defense Forces last year had already demonstrated its effectiveness during combat operations.
“We will continue to scale combat experience and technological solutions to save the lives of our soldiers and improve the effectiveness of missions,” he said.
Previously, National Guard combat units operated mainly as brigades and battalions integrated into the broader structure of Ukraine’s Defense Forces, with drone teams, assault groups and air-defense elements typically embedded within existing formations rather than organized into dedicated regiments. The new structure formalizes and expands these capabilities based on lessons learned during the full-scale war.
