Russia will not transfer control of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant to the United States, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Sunday, April 27.
Speaking to CBS, Lavrov said Russia has received no such proposal but would reject it if offered. He said the plant remains under the control of Russia’s Rosatom state corporation, with monitoring by International Atomic Energy Agency staff.

“The plant is in safe hands,” Lavrov said, accusing Ukraine of repeated attacks on the facility. Kyiv has made similar accusations against Moscow.
Russian forces captured the plant in early 2022 during the full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
In March, the White House said President Donald Trump told Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky that US control of Ukrainian nuclear plants would offer the “best protection.” Zelensky responded that the plants belong to the people of Ukraine, not private owners.
Earlier this month, Western media reported that a Trump administration proposal for a peaceful settlement of the war would keep the plant in Ukraine but under American control, supplying electricity to both Ukraine and Russia.
The Russian Foreign Ministry published a translation of Lavrov’s remarks on its website.
