SBU Attack on Russian Logistics Hub Blows Donbas Ammo Depot ‘Sky-High’

Drones operated by Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) struck Russian ammunition depots in the village of Velike Orikhove, near occupied Khartsyzsk in the Donetsk region, late on in the evening of July 2.

According to a statement on the SBU’s official Telegram channel, initial explosions that began around 10 p.m. were followed by a massive secondary detonation and fire.

Khartsyzsk, located near the occupied cities of Donetsk and Makiivka, was a strategically valuable Russian forces’ logistics hub. The SBU said that command posts, supply centers, and ammunition depots – all legitimate military targets – are located in the surrounding area.

“The SBU continues its systematic efforts to weaken the Russian army’s rear positions. Each such operation reduces the enemy’s offensive potential,” the statement said.

The Russian independent Telegram channel ASTRA reported that around 10:30 p.m., Ukrainian drones also targeted depots near the villages of Lypske [formerly Chervony Zhovten] and Velike Orikhove in the same region.

Videos circulating on social media captured the scale of the blasts, showing massive fireballs and ongoing detonations.

Russia launched a large-scale overnight attack on Ukraine, firing more than 220 drones and Iskander-M missiles at multiple regions. Ukrainian air defenses intercepted most of the incoming weapons, but several strikes still caused damage in nine locations. The assault hit infrastructure in Konotop, Dnipropetrovsk, and Odesa regions, injuring and killing civilians and disrupting utilities such as gas, electricity, and water supply systems.

On June 30, the SBU carried out a drone strike deep inside Russian territory, targeting the Izhevsk Kupol Electromechanical Plant, situated more than 1,300 kilometers (over 800 miles) from Ukraine, SBU sources told Kyiv Post.

The plant is a key Russian military-industrial facility that manufactures Tor and Osa air defense missile systems, as well as Harpy combat drones.

Kupol is currently under international sanctions for its role in supplying weapons for Russia’s war against Ukraine.

While Russian officials confirmed a drone attack on an industrial site in Izhevsk, they did not name the facility or provide details about the extent of the damage.

According to SBU sources, the strike directly hit Kupol’s production and storage buildings. At least two drones reportedly struck the site, resulting in large fires.
