Before becoming pope, the first US-born pontiff was outspoken in his criticism of President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance, posts that resurfaced Thursday as Pope Leo XIV officially assumed leadership of the Catholic Church.

Fellow cardinals on Thursday elected Chicago-born Robert Francis Prevost to lead the world’s 1.4 billion Catholics after a secret conclave in the Vatican’s Sistine Chapel.

As per Reuters report, the pope had shared several posts critical of Republican policies on the social platform X under his former name.

In one February repost, the account shared an article titled, “JD Vance is wrong: Jesus doesn’t ask us to rank our love for others.”

In April, the account reportedly reposted a comment about Trump’s meeting with El Salvador’s president, questioning the moral implications of a controversial prison used to detain suspected gang members: “Do you not see the suffering? Is your conscience not disturbed?”

Although multiple outlets, including Reuters and POLITICO, reported the tweet existed, Kyiv Post was unable to locate it on drprevost’s X account.

The posts drew backlash from some Trump supporters, including far-right activist Laura Loomer, who called the new pope “anti-Trump, anti-MAGA” and “a total Marxist like Pope Francis.”

Conservative commentator Charlie Kirk questioned whether Leo was “a pro-life warrior or open borders globalist installed to counter Trump.”

US Officials Reappear at Russia’s Top Economic Forum After Nearly a Decade

Putin aide Ushakov confirmed that a US delegation, led by Head of the US Federal Commission of Fine Arts Rodney Mims Cook, is visiting the SPIEF 2026 to talk about cultural ties amid a wider push from the West to separate culture from politics despite Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine.

Despite the criticism, Trump welcomed the election of a fellow American. “To have the pope from the United States of America, that’s a great honor,” he said at the White House.

Asked whether he would meet with Leo, Trump replied, “They’ve already called.” White House officials declined to comment on Prevost’s past posts, but staff applauded the historic news as it broke on television Thursday.

It’s unclear whether Prevost personally ran the X account, which dates back to 2011. Reuters could not independently verify its operator and contacted the Vatican and the Roman Catholic Diocese of Chiclayo in Peru, where Prevost served for years.

Leo is expected to continue the legacy of Pope Francis, who championed the poor and migrants and clashed with Trump-era immigration policies.

Francis once called those policies “disgraceful.” Vance, who met with Francis shortly before his death, acknowledged their differences but played them down at the time.

Vance, a practicing Catholic, said Thursday he hoped millions of Americans would pray for Pope Leo’s success.
