Two powerful explosions rocked a Russian naval facility near Vladivostok early Friday, in an area regularly used for Pacific Fleet training exercises.

While Russian officials blamed gas cylinders, Ukrainian special service sources told the Kyiv Post the blasts were the result of a successful operation by Ukraine’s Military Intelligence (HUR).

According to the sources, the explosions struck near Desantnaya Bay, affecting the deployment site of Russia’s 47th Separate Airborne Assault Battalion, part of the 155th Marine Brigade.

One explosion reportedly hit a checkpoint, the other struck near personnel and command quarters. The sources said military equipment and personnel were damaged in the attack.

Residents reported seeing at least 10 ambulances and evacuation helicopters at the scene. Damaged vehicles and gear were reportedly removed by military trucks.

Authorities quickly imposed a “counter-terrorist operation regime” in the area and sealed off the site. Roads around the bay were blocked, and security forces stopped vehicles and checked identification, according to local media.

Despite eyewitness reports and the claim of a targeted operation, officials in Russia’s Primorsky Krai said the cause was an accidental ignition of propane-butane cylinders in a car. They stated that no one was injured and did not comment on the military unit’s involvement.

Kremlin to Review Viral Video Alleging Army Abuses

The Kremlin stated it will review a viral video appeal from a Russian military veteran accusing commanders in Ukraine of torturing soldiers who refuse orders.

According to the anonymous Russian Telegram channel VchK-OGPU, large, tarp-covered objects were seen being removed from the area under guard.

Desantnaya Bay is a restricted area and a known site for Russian Navy drills. The 155th Marine Brigade has previously conducted amphibious training there and has been involved in key battles in Ukraine, including Mariupol and Vuhledar.

The bay is located near Russia’s Pacific coast, not far from the borders with China and North Korea. In May last year, 300 troops and 30 military vehicles took part in exercises there, practicing beach landings and camouflage maneuvers.
