Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Thursday he hopes to speak with US President Donald Trump at this weekend’s G7 summit to urge him to tighten sanctions on Russia.
“I count on having a conversation,” Zelensky told reporters, adding that a new round of sanctions is urgently needed as Russia ramps up drone attacks on Ukrainian cities.

“The final decision is still in the White House. It depends on the president of the United States,” he said.
The summit, set to begin this weekend in Canada, comes as Ukraine faces one of the heaviest waves of Russian drone strikes since the war began.
In recent days, Zelensky and his aides have stepped up calls for Western allies to increase pressure on Moscow, which continues to reject ceasefire proposals and escalate attacks on civilian infrastructure.
Trump has unsettled Kyiv and Europe by signaling a desire to rebuild ties with the Kremlin – an abrupt shift from Washington’s previous efforts to isolate Russian President Vladimir Putin following his 2022 invasion of Ukraine.
Tensions between Trump and Zelensky flared in February during a heated White House meeting, surprising many of Ukraine’s allies. In April, the two leaders had a brief follow-up discussion at the Vatican as Zelensky worked to ease the strain.
Despite diplomatic efforts led by the US, no peace breakthrough has been reached. Moscow has made clear it will not agree to an unconditional ceasefire.

Zelensky said a strong US sanctions package would send a powerful message. “It’s very important,” he said.
