The Australian Army has tested the Vector AI reconnaissance drone during the Southern Jackaroo exercises at the Townsville training area in Queensland, utilizing a system refined through combat deployment in Ukraine.

According to Defence Blog, the drone was manufactured by the German company Quantum Systems and used during the exercises for deep reconnaissance, target detection, and transmitting coordinates for simulated drone and artillery strikes against opposing force positions.

The platform features artificial intelligence (AI) data processing capabilities, allowing it to generate real-time terrain maps and autonomously detect and track objects. This software reduces the manual workload required for operators to review video feeds.

The Vector AI is an electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) drone with a 2.8-meter wingspan. It takes off without a runway and transitions to fixed-wing horizontal flight to cover longer distances.

Corporal Harrison Hinson of the Australian Army’s 2nd Cavalry Regiment stated the drone mitigates risks for military personnel by reducing the need for forward physical reconnaissance on foot or in vehicles. He noted the system functions as an additional tool for intelligence and strike capabilities rather than a complete replacement for traditional reconnaissance methods.

According to Defence-Blog, Quantum Systems’ drones have been deployed in Ukraine, where thousands of flight hours provided data to adapt the platform to electronic warfare environments and air defense systems. The version tested by the Australian military incorporates this battlefield data.

Half a million hours of Ukraine drone footage added to AI dataset

The integration of Ukrainian combat data into military artificial intelligence systems extends to broader training applications.

US-based data-labeling firm Enabled Intelligence recently released an AI training dataset containing 500,000 hours of drone footage recorded during the war in Ukraine. The collection is the first Ukraine-focused full-motion video library in the company’s database and includes pre-labeled video covering aerial object detection, vehicle classification, and ground activity.

Enabled Intelligence CEO Peter Kant stated the dataset provides unsimulated combat imagery to train AI models. The company indicated that the data reduces the time required to label and validate imagery for autonomous systems.

The dataset is available to approved users in the US, Ukraine, and NATO member states.
