German Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s cabinet agreed on a law authorizing police officers to down drones violating German airspace on Wednesday – although it still requires parliamentary approval.
As per Reuters, the law states that German police officers “may employ appropriate technical means against the system, its control unit, or its control link, if averting the danger by other measures would be futile or significantly impeded.”

This may include shooting the drone down in cases of “acute threat or serious harm.”
On Friday, 17 flights were cancelled at Munich airport after drones of unidentified origin appeared in the area. The incident follows similar events at airports across Europe.
German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt subsequently declared an “increased threat to German security” and announced the creation of a national counter-drone center.
Also on Wednesday, as per AFP, Dobrindt told a press conference that Germany is communicating with “countries that have significantly more experience” about the drone threat.
“We are in intensive exchange with Israel, we are also in exchange with Ukraine,” he said.
