Munich Airport was forced to completely freeze all flight operations for over an hour on Saturday morning, May 30, after pilots spotted a suspected drone operating in close proximity to active runways, Bild reported.
The security alert triggered a rapid response from German federal law enforcement, completely paralyzing commercial air traffic at the major European transit hub during the busy weekend morning hours.

Pilots spark emergency runway closure
The incident began shortly before 9:00 a.m. local time when incoming and departing flight crews filed urgent notices with air traffic control regarding a suspicious object in the local airspace.
Federal Police spokesperson Stefan Bayer confirmed to the German news outlet Bild that the sighting was highly likely to be an unauthorized drone maneuver.
“Around 9 a.m., pilots reported a suspicious sighting,” Bayer explained, noting that the threat level required an immediate and total cessation of all aviation activities across both of the airport’s main takeoff and landing runways.
A massive contingent of federal and state police officers immediately deployed across the tarmac and surrounding fields to track down the source of the radar breach and locate the drone operator. To aid the ground teams, law enforcement scrambled a police helicopter to conduct high-altitude thermal sweeps of the airport’s extended approach paths.
After a thorough forensic and visual sweep revealed no further airborne threats, airport authorities lifted the ground stop and fully resumed flight operations at approximately 10:05 a.m. local time.
Stray Ukrainian Drones in NATO Airspace Are ‘Price Worth Paying,’ Estonia FM Says
Part of a broader European trend
The hour-long disruption in Munich reflects a growing wave of drone-related safety closures and airspace violations that have increasingly rattled civil aviation and national security agencies across northern and eastern Europe.
Just weeks prior to the Munich lockdown, Finland was forced to initiate a near-identical emergency freeze, completely shutting down all air traffic at its primary international hub, Helsinki-Vantaa Airport, after a suspected long-range drone breached Finnish territory near a high-capacity oil refinery.
Similarly, Baltic alliance members have faced severe airspace incursions linked to the ongoing war in Ukraine. Earlier in May, Estonia’s national public warning system issued emergency air threat alerts before NATO Baltic Air Policing fighter jets shot down an unmanned aerial vehicle over Lake Võrtsjärv.
Neighboring Latvia has faced structural disruptions as well, including the temporary suspension of regional rail traffic and the scrambling of NATO jets following repeated border breaches by stray, explosive-laden drones that have impacted domestic fuel depots.
While German federal authorities have not yet indicated whether the Munich airport drone was a malicious external intrusion or an irresponsible civilian hobbyist, the Federal Police emphasized that a criminal investigation has been launched to identify the operator behind the dangerous breach.
